What is a Tiny House?
The tiny house story can be traced back to 2005 in the USA, where people who lost their homes after Hurricane Katrina began to look for less expensive solutions that would provide them with a decent living. Another event with similar repercussions was the global financial crisis in 2007-2008. These situations triggered the construction of small and highly structured houses, which were not only cheaper but also more ecological.
However, it is important to know that a “tiny house” is referred to when the living space does not exceed 37m2. Usually this does not refer to flats, but to detached houses or houses on wheels (not necessarily movable).
“Tiny house” is much more than a decision to live in a small space. It is a social movement, a lifestyle, dictated by specific values. It is closely linked to the architecture used, ecology, social life and the simplification of everyday life.
People opt for this lifestyle for many reasons. Mostly these are:
- saving (money, time as well as health),
- independence and self-sufficiency,
- caring for the environment,
- and minimising consumerism.
Currently, the tiny house lifestyle is popular in the USA, Australia or the UK, but it is also reaching all wealthier countries around the world.
